Electronic Warfare (EW)

Electronic Warfare is a military concept that includes those activities which feature the active use of electromagnetic energy, with the goal of controlling or maintaining superiority on the electromagnetic spectrum.

There are three broad categories in which one can classify activities to achieve control on the spectrum:

  1. Electronic Support (ES), geared toward the search, interception, and identification of radiation signals, as well as locating emission sources.
  2. Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), geared toward attacking electronic equipment, either to reduce their effectiveness, to cause them physical harm, or to deceive, distract or confuse.
  3. Electronic Counter Countermeasures (ECCM), focusing on protecting emissions, persons, facilities and equipment, so that they are not affected.

Isdefe's specific knowledge in this area includes support to EW programmes in the fields of systems engineering, methodologies for controlling development, radiofrequency technologies, information analysis, treatment, and merging, quality control and the verification of software, modelling and simulation.
