Summer Course at the Universidad de León on Monitoring and Tracking Space Debris

On Thursday, 10 July, as part of the summer courses programme at the Universidad de León, a workshop was held on “Spanish contributions to the programme to monitor and track space debris”. This workshop was opened by the Rector, Mr Juan Francisco García Marín. During the course, speakers from the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces, the CDTI, the Universidad de León and representatives from leading companies in the sector considered the various challenges stemming the threats posed to satellites by objects in near-Earth orbits (such as space debris).

Isdefe is hosting the initial meeting and launch of the European COPKIT Project, a new intelligence ecosystem to fight against terrorism and organised crime.

The primary purpose of the COPKIT Project, led by Isdefe and co-financed with EU funds from the H2020 initiative, is to create an intelligence and knowledge ecosystem for law enforcement agencies (LEA) in an effort to prevent, investigate and mitigate the use of new information and communication technologies by organised crime and terrorist groups by developing an early alert/early action system.

As part of the Space Horizon programme of the Horizons Network, the Carlos III University (UC3M) in Madrid and Isdefe organised a roundtable to go over the technologies that are needed to track and monitor space junk.

Sandra Bardón Moral and Jesús Rubio Melón took part in the International Conference on Cyber Conflict (CyCON), held from 30 May to 1 June in Tallin, the capital of the Republic of Estonia.

CyCon, organised by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), brings together more than 500 interdisciplinary decision-makers and experts from governments, militaries and industries from all over the world to discuss aspects related to cyberdefence and consider the legal, technical and strategic perspectives involved in this topic.

UNVEX, the leading gathering on unmanned aerial vehicles, which was held between 29 and 31 May, was opened by the Secretary of State for Defence, Mr Agustín Conde, and brought together 82 speakers and over 5000 participants from the European defence sector in the armed forces, institutions and private companies, as well as experts and professionals.

UNVEX 2018 was held at the Convention Centre of León and at the “Conde de Gazola” and “Virgen del Camino” military bases, which provided the settings for the flights of more than a dozen different types of RPAS.

Isdefe contributes to the 5th Workshop on International Joint Operations with “The methodological contribution and technology of Systems Engineering”

The 5th Workshop on International Joint Operations was held between 30 May and 1 June at the University of Alicante’s School of Law.

Sponsored jointly by the Civil Guard General Directorate and the National Distance Learning University (UNED), through the Institute for Internal Security Research (IUISI), this year’s edition focused on the situation at the European Union’s external borders, how joint international operations are conducted and how to promote the exchange of know-how and experiences in the area of public security.

The NITEC ’18 event was held from 22 to 24 May in Berlin, organised by the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) and AFCEA TechNet International, with the theme being “NATO’s Digital Endeavour: Expanding the Ecosystem”.

This year saw the 3rd edition of the Cyberdefence Workshop of the Joint Cyberdefence Command (MCCD), titled “Military Operations in Cyberspace”.

After receiving numerous visitors, the workshop was closed yesterday by the Minister of Defence, Ms María Dolores de Cospedal, who noted that “threats from cyberspace are directly and increasingly affecting the national defence and security of Spain. We have to have the means and be at the forefront in our preparedness and capacity to respond”.

The 3rd Cyberdefence Workshop, organised by the Joint Cyberdefence Command (MCCD), will be held in Ciudad de la Imagen from 22 to 24 May.

The proliferation of information and communication technologies (ICT) is resulting in society’s increasing dependence on every aspect of ICT. This new scenario is a primary consideration to take into account in national security, the rule of law, economic prosperity, the welfare state and even the operation of society and public administrations.

Yet again this year, the Advanced Armed Forces College (ESFAS) invited Isdefe to participate in the Advanced Strategic Studies Course for Senior Ibero-American Officers, which began on 18 April at the Advanced Centre for National Defence Studies.

Representing Isdefe was the Head of Business Development, Mr Álvaro Manresa, who went to the Advanced Centre for Defence Studies to give a presentation on ENGINEERING SYSTEMS AT THE SERVICE OF DEFENCE, after which a colloquium was held with those in attendance.
