On 7 October the Spanish Committee of the World Energy Council (CECME), the Spanish Energy Club (ENERCLUB), the Advanced Centre for National Defence Studies (CESEDEN) and the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE) presented the seventh edition of “Energy and Geostrategy”, a virtual event that was broadcast on YouTube.

Mr David Martín Borreguero, an energy consultant for the Ministry of Defence from Isdefe’s Infrastructure Consulting Department, presented the various activities and projects created within the European Defence Agency’s Energy and Environment Working Group (EnE WG), and in the European Commission’s Consultation Forum for Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector (CF SEDSS), as part of the discussion on “Energy sustainability in the defence and security sector - Global, European and NATO context”.

Mr David Borreguero explained that the defence sector is undergoing a process of cultural transition and a paradigm shift in which the concept of energy as a commodity is changing to one of energy as a military capability.

The rational, efficient and sustainable use of energy boosts resilience and reduces vulnerabilities not only in field operations - where reducing the need to resupply and refuel equates, first and foremost, to human lives, while also increasing the range and scope of the missions - but also in the everyday operations at permanent facilities on Spanish soil by reducing the costs associated with energy consumption and freeing up the unspent funds for use elsewhere.

While these aspects might have been of no concern to the defence sector just a few years ago, the goals of energy efficiency and reduced environmental impacts are becoming increasingly important in military operations, and they are now part of the priorities of global defence policies and strategies.

Opening this event were Mr Antonio Brufau, President of Repsol, Mr Iñigo Díaz de Espada, President of CECME, Ms María Victoria Zingoni, President of ENERCLUB and Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez, Secretary General of Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence.

The event included a discussion on the main issues in world geopolitics featuring Brigadier General Francisco José Dacoba, Director of IEEE, and Ms Marta Camacho, Director of Institutional Relations in Spain and Europe at Repsol.
