The Defence and Security Chair of the Isdefe Horizons Network presents the awards for the best Master’s and Undergraduate Theses

Elena Fernández and Ángel Cerada took centre stage at the presentation of the Defence and Security Chair of the Isdefe Horizons Network as the winners of the best Master’s and Undergraduate theses.

The event was held virtually on Thursday, 15 April, and featured, in addition to the recipients, Mr Félix Pérez, Director of the Advanced School of Telecommunications Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSIT-UPM) and Mr Mateo Burgos, Director of the Isdefe-UPM chair in Defence and Security.

Representing Isdefe were Mr Jesús Alonso, Director of Business Development, Mr Jesús Alcázar, head of Intelligence and Public Security at the Defence and Security Office, who also manages the Defence and Security Observatory of the Horizons Network for Isdefe, and Ms Belinda Misiego, coordinator of the Horizons Network and the event’s moderator.

“Design and implementation of a machine learning system to detect false social media profiles” and “Analysis and modelling of systems to stabilise electro-optical sensors on-board unmanned aerial vehicles” were the titles of the best Master’s and Undergraduate theses, respectively, which were declared the winners at this year’s event after the Chair evaluated a total of 25 papers presented in the subject of Defence and Security, an area in which Isdefe and the ETSIT-UPM are benchmarks in society.

This marks the 15th year of the collaboration between Isdefe and ETSIT-UPM on issues of defence and security, which underscores “the importance to the University of the University-Company Chairs”, as noted by Mr Félix Pérez, the director of the School and who was tasked with opening the event.

Mr Jesús Alonso, Director of Business Development at Isdefe, shone the spotlight on Isdefe’s Horizons Network as an instrument for promoting innovation at the company, and Mr Jesús Alcázar, head of Intelligence and Public Security at the Defence and Security Office, noted the scientific/technical quality of all the papers presented and the difficulty the jury had selecting the best one in each category.

After the winning students explained their respective papers, Mr Mateo Burgos closed the event by congratulating the winners and their advisors, and highlighting the students’ progress during their time at the ETSIT, which was made possible in part by the school’s partnership with companies like Isdefe and by initiatives such as this award.
