The Army's “General Morillo” Base, located in Pontevedra, will host the 9th Edition of the National R&D Congress in Defence and Security (DESEI+D 2022) on 15, 16 and 17 November.

The announcement was made by Major General José Luis Murga Martínez, Deputy Director General of Planning, Technology and Innovation (SDGPLATIN) of the Ministry of Defence's Directorate General of Armament and Matériel (DGAM), at the presentation ceremony, which was held on 16 March at the Isdefe assembly hall in a blended format.

Also presented at this event was the book on the "Antonio Torres" R&D - DESEI+D 2020 Award, which contains the top ten entries in the 5th Edition of the Isdefe "Antonio Torres" R&D Award, convened to mark the 8th National R&D Congress in Defense and Security (DESEI+D 2020), which was held virtually from 24 to 26 November 2020.

The congress is organised by the General Sub-Directorate of Planning, Technology and Innovation of the General Directorate of Armament and Matériel, the General Sub-Directorate of Military Education of the General Directorate of Recruitment and Military Education, the University Defence Centres and Isdefe.

As in previous editions, this Congress provides a forum and meeting point for all the actors involved in R&D in the field of Defence and Security, where they will have the opportunity to present and disseminate the results of the latest research and work carried out in some of the thematic areas related to Defence and Security.

The ceremony to present DESEI+D 2022, and the book on the Isdefe R&D 2020 Prize was opened by the CEO of Isdefe, Mr Francisco Quereda Rubio, and Major General Pedro José García Cifo, Director of Recruitment and Military Education (DIGEREM) for the Ministry of Defence.

Both underscored the track record the Congress has built up, with eight editions held and high involvement figures, as a forum for researchers and experts from various public research agencies, armed forces, law enforcement agencies, academia and companies in the Defence and Security sector to meet and exchange experiences and knowledge.

The summary of the previous DESEI+D 2020 congress was provided by Colonel Francisco José Gómez Ramos, director of the University Defense Centre of Zaragoza, who noted the high participation rate despite being held virtually as a result of the healthcare measures imposed due to the pandemic.

Mr Jesús Alonso, Director of Business Development at Isdefe, presented the Isdefe "Antonio Torres" R&D DESEi+d 2020 Award Book, which features the top 10 entries from the 5th edition of the Award, corresponding to the 8th DESEI+D.

The book includes the winning presentation, made by Mr David Novoa Paradela from the University of A Coruña, who conducted his research in collaboration with CESADAR, the Centre for the Supervision and Analysis of Navy Data, located in Cartagena. The presentation is entitled “Predictive Maintenance of Ship Engines through Machine Learning”.
