NESTOR – Strengthening and safeguarding Europe's borders through a fully functional next-generation surveillance system.

Isdefe is part of a consortium of 21 partners from 13 European countries that, with support from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, has launched the 18-month European NESTOR project.

The NESTOR project - An Enhanced Pre-Frontier Intelligence Picture to Safeguard the European Borders - addresses and supports the Integrated Management of European Borders by incorporating the most advanced surveillance technologies into a deployable holistic system that is capable of detecting, evaluating and effectively responding to illegal activities.

The project recently initiated activities to improve the protection and safeguarding of Europe's maritime and land borders with the aim of creating a fully functional holistic next-generation border surveillance system to determine the pre-frontier situation, which covers both maritime and land border operations.

ISDEFE's experience and knowledge in providing consulting and technical assistance services to law enforcement allows the company to assume its leadership role of analysing and defining user requirements and operational scenarios. ISDEFE also leads the development and creation of the community of stakeholders who will support the project.

Over the past few years, the European Community has faced a number of challenges related to both the political and tactical security of its external borders which have highlighted the need for concrete policies and measures to safeguard Europe's security.

Both the European Commission and the European Council are taking a number of steps in this regard.

Specifically, the resulting system will be enhanced with precise detection capabilities to optimally monitor border territories. The beneficiaries of this project will be end-users such as national, regional and European authorities responsible for border surveillance, law enforcement, intelligence agencies and security providers

The official launch meeting of the NESTOR project took place virtually on 4 and 5 November 2021, and featured more than 50 attendees who are committed to working together to define use cases, develop technology prototypes and produce a profitable and viable solution.

The solution proposed by NESTOR, based on existing state-of-the-art technologies, will not only yield considerable cost savings, but it will also ensure that the results can be quickly adopted.
