Main projects

This project is focused on developing a comprehensive security framework for ATM (Air Traffic Management) and is designed to go into operation once SESAR is deployed. Launched in September 2013, the activities to evaluate threats and vulnerabilities of the ATM system, to define the requirements and the architecture, and to define the validation tests necessary for the operational acceptance of the prototypes developed were conducted in 2015.

The PERSEUS project contributed to enhancing border surveillance capabilities, in keeping with the implementation of the EUROSUR regulation. Its goal was to support decision making by defining an improved system architecture that meets EUROSUR requirements, to develop technology proposals that address the operational obstacles defined by the end users, and to validate the solutions proposed through demonstrations in actual and relevant scenarios.

The findings and recommendations issued by the project partners will source new areas of research and development in the field of border surveillance for years to come.

Isdefe’s involvement as the head of user integration and system validation contributed to reinforcing the consistency of the proposed solution and to define forward-looking lines of work for developing, testing and validating systems through innovative user-driven initiatives.

The main goal of ePOOLICE, which was coordinated by Isdefe, was to develop an effective and efficient system to monitor the environment as part of an early-warning system to detect emerging organised crime activities.

The project was based on refining strategic analysis methods and on developing technical tools to support these methods. The solutions proposed were tested and evaluated by running realistic use case scenarios that were developed with help from the end users.

Specifically, the main scenarios chosen for the proof of concept were cocaine smuggling, human trafficking and the theft of copper. Central to the solution was the development of an environmental knowledge repository (EKR) of all relevant information and knowledge, including scanned information and derived, learned or hypothesized knowledge, as well as the metadata needed for credibility and confidence assessments, traceability, and privacy protection management.

For effective and efficient utilization, as well as for interoperability, the repository applied a standard representation form for all information and knowledge. For effective and efficient scanning of the raw information sources, the project developed an intelligent environmental radar that utilizes the knowledge repository to focus the monitoring.

The IGNIS project, an integrated system for fighting forest fires, is a project in the Ministry of Science and Innovation’s INNPACTO Programme, part of the INNPACTO 2011 call for projects, which covers the years 2011, 2012 and 2013.

The project’s main goal is to develop short- and medium-term solutions that improve the current communications systems used to manage and fight forest fires.

The IGNIS project is focused on developing new technologies that rely on the design of an autonomous positioning system based on signal intensity, developing beam-steerable WIMAX antennas, implementing low-bandwidth IP communication networks, transmitting scalable video in real time and implementing all this into unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The project emerged from the results of the basic studies and research into firefighting and prevention conducted as part of the CENIT PROMETEO project, which included Isdefe as part of the consortium. The goal of the IGNIS project is to implement a testing and development platform that can address the communications needs detected in PROMETEO.

Isdefe led the Scenario Requirement and Definition (WP1) stage and coordinated the design, development and implementation of a technology demonstrator to show the interoperability of low-bandwidth IP communications networks using DDS and associated web services (WP2: Architecture and Design and WP6: Integration and Validation).

CLOSEYE consists of validating innovative services involving the surveillance of the EU's maritime borders in an actual operational environment by following the directives contained in the EUROSUR Regulation and based on the seven areas of capabilities identified as needed for achieving the mission's objectives: Command, control and coordination, Acquisition, Operation and Analysis, Communications, Optimum Resource Management, Mobility and Sustainability.

The project is being carried out in three consecutive phases:
1.    Validation strategy.
2.    Gradual implementation of the strategy in different phases, from development to operation, gathering findings based on a review of the solution adopted, a technical verification and its operational validation in an actual maritime border surveillance scenario and, in parallel, by executing contracts with industry to implement the technical solutions.

Results analysis, comparison of alternatives and issuing of recommendations for future developments and the provision of similar services.

The goal of SECURESTATION is to improve the security of passenger stations/terminals against terrorist attacks and against safety incidents. This project focuses on the design of the structure through the use of technologies and methodologies that reduce the impact on passengers, staff and on the structure itself in the event of an explosion, fire or an attack with toxic agents.

The project's main objective is the design, configuration and implementation of an Integrated Crisis Management System (SIGE) to respond to environmental pollution of waters from oil spills with a real capability to cooperate in decision making and to optimise the management of the information gathered from pollution events.
The proposed solution integrates different modules or sub-systems: SIGE (Integrated Crisis Management System), SIZ (Zone Integration System), SRM (Remote Mobile System) and SIM (Oil Spill Simulator).
Although each of these modules could be used independently, their integration into a single system offers a more comprehensive and versatile solution for end users and institutions: ports, maritime rescue, civil protection, refineries, environmental agencies, et.

  • Real-time information of the crisis situation through communications and maps corresponding to the results of the simulation, models and resources.
  • Contribution to crisis management through communications and inputs to the system.
  • Analysis tools for use both during and after a crisis.

The goal of the VIRTUOSO project is to provide security forces with a set of advanced tools for processing all types of information obtained from open sources to aid in decision making and integrated in an open, standard and inter-operable framework.

This project has given rise to the creation of a framework based on open-source software elements that allow for the integration of tools for gathering, processing and analysing information from open sources, crafting intelligence and conveying said intel to the decision makers.

This middleware platform enables the plug & play integration of various features, as well as the use of data originating in a broad spectrum of sources, media and formats, while at the same time ensuring high compatibility between different technology providers.

VIRTUOSO is aimed at aiding in decision-making processes by offering analyses and research in areas such as country analysis, current and emerging trend evaluation, risk evaluation, early warning, scenario planning and strategic management, all in various areas (financial, political, social, technological, etc.) and, in particular, in the field of security and defence.
