UNVEX, the leading gathering on unmanned aerial vehicles, which was held between 29 and 31 May, was opened by the Secretary of State for Defence, Mr Agustín Conde, and brought together 82 speakers and over 5000 participants from the European defence sector in the armed forces, institutions and private companies, as well as experts and professionals.

UNVEX 2018 was held at the Convention Centre of León and at the “Conde de Gazola” and “Virgen del Camino” military bases, which provided the settings for the flights of more than a dozen different types of RPAS.

This fifth edition of UNVEX included a schedule of conferences with renowned speakers in the area of autonomous systems for Security and Defence, and in thematic areas spanning key technologies involving platforms, communications, sensors, UTM, C-UAS and UCAV.

Andrés Arranz, an engineer in the Transport Quality and Testing Division of the Transport and IT Direction at Isdefe, gave a talk on “U-SPACE and drone integration in controlled airspace”, which was presented at part of the “Plenary Room: Integration in air space, a challenge”.

In this presentation, Andrés Arranz offered a brief explanation of what is defined in Europe as U-SPACE, the differences with the American UTM concept and the state of the art in the implementation of U-Space in Europe and the problem of integrating drones in controlled airspace.
